Dr. Roozen: I’m Dr. Mark Roozen, a Veterinarian and International Business Advisor. My globe-trotting experiences have enriched my journey. In 2001/2002, I explored over 20 countries across Europe, Asia, and Australasia. This adventure not only expanded my horizons but also deepened my love for animals, especially horses.

Throughout my career, I’ve owned a mixed practice and even built a state-of-the-art equine facility in Kentucky. After my successful tenure at the equine facility, I embraced a new mission. As an independent Business Advisor, I specialize in offering friendly and insightful guidance to new veterinary practitioners, as well as seasoned advice to established practice owners.

I remain dedicated to continuous learning and staying at the forefront of industry trends. My unwavering passion for animals, particularly horses, drives me to seek innovative solutions to enhance equine practices worldwide.

Jutta Putz: Wow! Dr. Roozen, your year-long adventure across more than 22 countries to explore equine health and care is truly remarkable. Can you share some of your most memorable experiences from your journey, starting with your home base in Kentucky?

Dr. Roozen: Certainly. Kentucky, known as the “Horse Capital of the World,” was a fantastic starting point. The Thoroughbred racehorses in Kentucky are celebrated for their speed, grace, and competitive spirit. What’s equally impressive is the advanced equine care practices and management they receive.

The state boasts renowned veterinary hospitals, cutting-edge diagnostic technology, and a network of experienced equine professionals. Preventive healthcare, nutrition, and specialized training are just a few aspects of the rigorous care provided to these magnificent horses.

Jutta Putz: That’s fascinating. How did your journey from Kentucky lead you to explore equine health and care in India?

Dr. Roozen: India was a captivating stop on my journey. There, I had the privilege of encountering Marwari horses. These horses are celebrated for their distinctive curved ears and regal appearance, and they hold a special place in the culture of Rajasthan.

Equine care in India is deeply rooted in tradition and respect. The Rajput community has a profound bond with their Marwari horses, and their care combines centuries-old wisdom with modern veterinary practices. It’s this combination of tradition and innovation that has widened my perspective.

Jutta Putz: Your experiences in India sound incredibly enriching. Can you tell us more about your journey to Egypt and your insights into Arabian horses?

Dr. Roozen: Egypt was another remarkable part of my journey. It introduced me to the world of Arabian horses, an ancient breed celebrated for its elegance and stamina. The Arabian horse holds a special place in the hearts of the Egyptian people, and their grace and beauty are deeply revered. The Bedouin tribes have historically been custodians of these horses, preserving their exceptional qualities.

Equine care in Egypt is steeped in tradition and meticulous breeding practices. The welfare of Arabian horses is of paramount importance, reflecting the deep respect Egyptians hold for these animals.

Jutta Putz: Your insights into equine care across these diverse cultures are fascinating. Can you share any experiences from your time in New Zealand and Europe?

Dr. Roozen: My travels to New Zealand were a unique experience. There, I encountered the hardy and versatile New Zealand Thoroughbred, known for its adaptability and athleticism. The Kiwi approach to equine health often involves natural horsemanship, allowing horses to graze in picturesque pastures and interact with their natural surroundings. It’s a reminder of how different environments and cultures can shape equine care.

In Europe, the diversity of equine breeds and care practices was evident. From the robust and resilient Fjord horses in Norway to the agile Lipizzaner stallions in Austria, each region had its unique approach to equine health and well-being. European practices often emphasized classical dressage and historical equine traditions, providing valuable insights into the longevity of these majestic breeds.
